EPDM vs. TPV Rubber Surfacing: What We’ve Learned After Years of Hands-On Experience

At FLOCO Decking Systems, we’ve dedicated our lives (and our very tan arms) to building safe, beautiful, long-lasting outdoor spaces- especially around pools, lanais, patios, and playgrounds. And over the years, one question we hear again and again is:

“What’s the difference between EPDM and TPV rubber surfacing?”

With rubber surfacing becoming more and more popular, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. You’ll find all kinds of opinions online-some swearing by EPDM, others hyping TPV. The truth is: both materials have their place.

But after years of hands-on experience in Florida’s intense sun and storms (and also in Colorado’s freeze-thaw cycles), we’ve learned which rubber material consistently holds up best in extreme conditions-and gives our customers the longest-lasting, most beautiful results.

Let’s break it all down for you—sweet, simple, and straight from the heart.

EPDM vs. TPV: What’s the Difference?

Both EPDM and TPV are high-quality rubber granules used to create that seamless, soft, slip-resistant surface you know and love.

  • EPDM stands for Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer. It’s been widely used in playground surfacing for decades. It’s flexible, soft, and comes in a wide variety of colors.

  • TPV, or Thermoplastic Vulcanizate, is a newer-generation rubber designed with improved UV stability, durability, and long-term performance in mind. It also comes in gorgeous colors and feels just as comfortable underfoot.

At first glance, they can look pretty similar. But over time- especially in certain climates- the differences really start to show.

Our Journey With Rubber Surfacing Materials

When we first started FLOCO, we used EPDM in many of our early installs. It performed well in some cases, and for a while, we thought it would be our go-to.

But as we began installing more and more rubber surfaces around sun-drenched pool decks, humid lanais, and high-use commercial areas, we started noticing signs of wear sooner than expected: color shifts, changes in texture, and general weathering that just didn’t align with the long-term performance we promised our clients.

That led us down the path of research, testing, and learning.

Why We Fell in Love With TPV

After years of firsthand experience (and a few tough lessons), we began using TPV rubber granules for the majority of our projects-and the results have been consistently incredible.

Here’s what we love most:

1.UV Resistance That Lasts

In sunny climates like Florida, fading is a real concern. TPV holds its color beautifully over time, thanks to full-through pigmentation and UV-resistant composition.

2.Durability in Harsh Conditions

From Florida’s heat, storms and humidity to Colorado’s snow and freezing temps, TPV has proven to stay flexible, cushioned, and intact through it all.

3.Comfort Underfoot

TPV maintains its texture and softness, even years later. It feels incredible barefoot- and it’s gentle on pets, little feet, and loungers.

4.Vibrant Custom Colors

We work with you to create custom blends that match your home, tile, patio furniture- you name it. With TPV, your colors stay true and strong.

Do We Still Use EPDM?

Yes, absolutely. We still offer EPDM (and custom blends of EPDM and TPV) for specific projects- especially in shaded, indoor, or low-exposure areas where UV intensity and moisture are less of a concern.

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution. We help every customer choose the right fit for their space, goals, and climate. That’s what being experts (and good humans) is all about.

What Really Sets FLOCO Apart: Our Prep Work

Here’s a little secret:

Even the best material will fail if the surface beneath it isn’t prepped right.

That’s why we go above and beyond before the first granule of rubber is ever poured.

At FLOCO, our process includes:

  • Fixing drainage and puddling issues to prevent water damage

  • Leveling, repairing, and priming the surface with top-tier materials

  • Hand-mixing and troweling each batch for a flawless, custom finish

  • Using premium binders and expert install techniques to ensure a strong, lasting bond

We’re not just installers- we’re artists and engineers of safety, comfort, and style.

Our team takes pride in every project because we know we’re creating something your family will live with for years.

Want to See It in Action?

We recently put together a video comparing one of our newer TPV surfaces with an older surface that had aged under tough conditions. The difference in color, texture, and longevity was amazing to see.

It’s moments like these that remind us why we do what we do- and why we’re so proud of how far we’ve come.

Final Thoughts (From One Family to Another)

At the end of the day, both EPDM and TPV have their strengths. What matters most is matching the right material to the right space—and having a team who truly cares about the end result.

We’ve spent years refining our process, investing in better materials, and learning how to create surfaces that are not only beautiful- but built to last.

So whether you’re upgrading your pool deck, transforming your patio, or creating a commercial oasis- we’re here for you, with experience, heart, and a little rubber magic.
